Michael Martin

German born photographer Michael Martin is a lecturer and qualified geographer whose passion for taking photos began as a young child via his fascination with astronomy. Martin remembers how the lens of his camera allowed him to capture the stars, planets and galaxies that his naked eye struggled to see.
My camera gives me the rare opportunity to be able to travel for work and I love nothing more than being able to showcase my images on screen, in books and in exhibitions.
I first started shooting with a Nikon F5 in 1998 and feel as though my career has developed alongside the evolution of the Nikon range – look at where we both are today!
One of the reasons I’ve been with Nikon all these years is that the cameras are perfect to handle and are very reliable, which is what I need most, especially when I’m on expeditions in the middle of the desert or in the artic snow. That’s without mentioning the superb lenses available to accompany them…
On my travels, I’m always inspired by the people I meet as well as the incredible landscapes I’m able to witness. It never really sinks in how beautiful our planet is. Of course I have a rough idea of the pictures I want to bring home, but with my Nikon gear in hand, most of what I shoot ‘just happens’, which is a truly magical feeling.
